Frase vs Surfer (2026): Research, Outlines, Editing & AI Visibility Compared

Choose Frase when your main need is a connected research, drafting, audit and publishing workflow. Choose Surfer when its content optimization, collaboration and plan-specific visibility monitoring fit your editorial process. Compare actual allowances and billing commitments before buying: Frase articles per month and Surfer documents on annual plans are not interchangeable units.

Direct Answer for Searchers & AI Engines

Frase vs Surfer (2026 Verdict): Choose Frase ($49/mo Starter) if your primary operational bottleneck is end-to-end research and CMS drafting handoff (direct WordPress, Webflow, and Wix publishing). Choose Surfer ($49/mo annual Discovery or $99/mo Standard) if your priority is advanced NLP content guidelines, cannibalization detection, and multi-engine AI Search tracking across ChatGPT and Google AI. Neither tool guarantees ranking uplift or replaces human editorial review.

This is a researched comparison of official product documentation checked on 8 September 2026. It contains no claimed hands-on speed benchmark, measured ranking improvement or identical-draft scoring experiment. Frase pricing: monthly article limits are explicit

Prices below are USD from Frase’s current pricing page. Annual totals use the displayed rounded monthly equivalent multiplied by twelve; confirm the final charge at checkout. Taxes and optional usage are excluded.

Frase plans, checked 8 September 2026
Plan Monthly / annual equivalent Articles / audit pages per month Seats / sites AI prompts
Starter $49 / $39; displayed-rate annual total $468 10 articles / 50 audit pages 1 seat / 1 site 50 prompts
Professional $129 / $103; displayed-rate annual total $1,236 40 articles / 250 audit pages 3 seats / 5 sites 200 prompts
Scale $299 / $239; displayed-rate annual total $2,868 100 articles / 1,000 audit pages 5 seats / 10 sites 500 prompts

Starter stops at its monthly limits. Professional and Scale offer optional pay-as-you-go, off by default. The published extra-article charge is $5 on Professional and $4 on Scale; additional audit pages and prompts have separate rates. Extra seats on these two tiers are $29 monthly each. Do not compare the base prices while silently assuming unlimited output.

Frase lists WordPress, Webflow, Sanity and Wix publishing, as well as FraseCMS. Professional adds a calendar, internal-linking suggestions and crawler monitoring. Scale adds exportable client-ready reports. The seven-day trial lists capped quantities: five articles, 50 audit pages, 25 AI prompts and up to three seats, without a credit card.

The API, MCP and CLI request allowances are 5,000, 20,000 and 50,000 monthly across Starter, Professional and Scale. An integration’s availability does not establish that it will preserve every custom WordPress field. FraseCMS paid hosting is a separate add-on; an existing WordPress publisher need not move platforms to evaluate the editor.

Surfer pricing: do not label annual document pools as monthly quotas

The retrieved official pricing view shows these monthly equivalents billed yearly. Its FAQ says annual-plan credits reset yearly or after plan changes. This table does not represent month-to-month pricing.

Surfer annual-billing view, checked 8 September 2026
Plan Displayed equivalent / calculated annual cost Create or optimize documents Tracked AI prompts
Discovery $49 / $588/yr 120 documents/year 0; page tracking is a different allowance
Standard $99 / $1,188/yr 360 documents/year 25, weekly refresh (ChatGPT)
Pro $182 / $2,184/yr 360 documents/year 50, daily refresh
Peace of Mind $299 / $3,588/yr Unlimited (fair use) 100, daily refresh

Standard’s product card lists integrations, collaboration, plagiarism checking and rank-drop detection. Pro adds internal linking, coverage-gap features, a cannibalization report and MCP. Peace of Mind explicitly lists API access. A separate AI Search Analytics plan is displayed at $158 monthly billed yearly; do not assume that a monitoring-only purchase includes the editorial plan’s document allowance.

Compare both on the same five tasks

1. Research a real buying question

Use one assignment: “Which content tool fits a solo WordPress publisher who updates existing guides?” In either product, review relevant search results, official specifications and the audience’s constraints. A useful output is a brief that separates product facts from judgments. Neither tool’s summary should replace opening the underlying source, especially for pricing or billing.

2. Turn research into an outline

Require the same sections: direct answer, plan comparison, worked workflow, limitations, alternatives and purchasing checks. Frase’s documented research-to-draft loop is relevant if that handoff is your bottleneck. Surfer’s content guidelines are relevant if you already have an outline and want an additional coverage check. Evaluate which suggestions clarify the decision rather than copying every competitor heading.

3. Edit without making the prose worse

Take a weak sentence such as “This tool boosts every affiliate website.” A better version identifies a user, a task and a limit: “This plan can support a single site’s monthly editing workload, but it does not replace a technical crawl.” Judge both tools by whether they help you reach that clarity. Term density, content scores, AI detectors and “humanizer” labels do not prove correctness or human authorship.

4. Publish a draft safely

Frase explicitly lists several CMS destinations. Surfer lists integrations in its relevant plan cards. In both cases, verify a staging transfer with a table, internal link, affiliate link, caption and image alt text. Check that the destination is a draft, the URL stays unchanged, the SEO title is handled correctly and no unsupported block disappears. Do not grant unattended publication solely to save a copy-and-paste step.

5. Report visibility without overselling it

Frase Starter lists ChatGPT and Google AI, Professional adds Perplexity, and Scale adds Claude and Gemini. Surfer’s prompt count, engine scope and refresh schedule vary by plan. Compare those dimensions explicitly. A vendor visibility score covers its collection method and chosen prompts; it is not your total market share or a complete record of every user’s answers.

A practical evaluation scorecard

  • Did the brief answer the buying questions without introducing unsupported claims?
  • How much editing was still necessary? Record actual minutes rather than a vendor’s promise.
  • Did one completed assignment consume articles, documents, generation credits or API requests?
  • Did the exported or published draft preserve links, images, tables and metadata?
  • Can a teammate review changes before they reach production?
  • Are the monitored engines, prompts and refresh schedules relevant to your audience?
  • What is due today, and what renews if you do nothing?

Frequently asked questions

Does Frase Starter include ten or thirty articles?

The current official plan lists ten articles per month. Old quotas should not be carried into a current purchasing decision.

Is Surfer Standard $99 on a monthly contract?

The $99 figure verified here is a monthly equivalent billed yearly. The calculated annual amount is $1,188 before taxes or extras. Check the monthly billing option separately if you need a shorter commitment.

Which is faster?

This comparison does not include a controlled timed test, so it does not declare a speed winner. Use the same assignment and record research, correction and publishing time—not generation time alone.

Can either guarantee Google rankings or AI citations?

No. Google’s AI search guidance emphasizes useful content and ordinary Search foundations. An in-app score is not a platform ranking requirement.
